Egyptian giants Al Ahly have imposed a financial penalty on winger Mahmoud Trezeguet after he violated the team’s penalty-taking order during their opening match at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
The incident occurred in the goalless draw against MLS side Inter Miami, which marked the kickoff of the historic 32-team tournament in the United States. Al Ahly were awarded a penalty during the match, with head coach José Riveiro designating striker Wessam Abou Ali as the first-choice taker.
However, Trezeguet overruled the team order and stepped up to take the spot-kick himself. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, his attempt was saved by the Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari leaving a vital chance wasted in a tightly contested match.
Had the penalty been converted, Al Ahly might have secured all three points in their Group A opener. The match ended in a 0–0 draw.
According to prominent Egyptian broadcaster Ahmed Shobier, Al Ahly decided to fine Trezeguet for bypassing the manager’s instructions. The player reportedly accepted the decision and issued an apology to his teammates and the coaching staff.
Al Ahly remain in contention in Group A of the Club World Cup, with two crucial fixtures remaining—against Brazilian champions Palmeiras and Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto.
