South Africa football team’s qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup set the bar high for the country’s flagship league to emulate, a club coach has said.
TS Galaxy FC’s coach Adnan Beganovic says South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) needs improvements to reflect Bafana Bafana’s feat.
National coach Hugo Broos drew his entire first XI in the decisive game for Group C against Rwanda from the PSL. Bafana Bafana Amavubi 3-0 last week to seal a direct ticket to the World Cup at the expense of other group members Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Lesotho.
Nigeria finished in second place of the pool, and must pass the test of continental play-offs to make it to America. The Super Eagles’ squad boasts Europe-based players such as Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen.
In view of this, Beganovic said officiating standards must also improve. The coach was reacting to his team’s 2-1 loss to Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership match played at Seshego Stadium on Saturday. He suggested that poor officiating must have contributed to the defeat.
“How we conceded the first goal was not real. For the second goal, we lost our focus. It is a clean goal,” Beganovic told SuperSport Television.
“PSL is [a] serious [league] with serious teams. We need to improve in everything. Bafana Bafana is going to the World Cup [finals], we [also] need to follow that example, and not only players and teams, [but also] in terms of choosing] who is involved in every game.”
“[There were] too many free-kicks around the box, too many corner-kicks, something is wrong. We can’t always complain when something happens here.”
Goals from Lehlogonolo Mokone and Thabang Siyaboni sealed the victory for Magesi while Galaxy’s consolation came off the boots of Saluleko Mahlambi. Galaxy are in eighth place on the standings, eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while Magesi occupy 13th place with nine points.
