Tunisia: Club Africain seize opportunity to move level at the top

After Saturday’s Tunisian Classico ended scoreless, Club Africain took advantage to move level with Espérance Tunis at the top of the Tunisia Ligue 1 Professionnelle table following Sunday’s 2-0 victory over lowly AS Gabès.

Tunisia national team forward Firas Chaouat continues to dominate the scoring charts and make a strong case for inclusion in the nation’s 2026 World Cup squad. A poacher’s finish at the end of the first half put Chaouat six goals clear of his nearest challenger for top scorer honors and set the tone for victory.

Bilel Aït Malek finished off the victory in second half stoppage time for CA, who are now level with rivals Espérance with only six rounds remaining. Considering the defending champions are still engaged in the CAF Champions League, Club Africain will fancy their chances of launching a serious challenge to EST who have won the last two editions of the league.

Elsewhere on Sunday, CS Sfaxien also took down a relegation candidate with a 3-0 victory over JS Kairouan. Nigerian forward Emmanuel Ogbole scored a hat-trick for CSS, who strengthened their hold on third place and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup with the result. In the other match of the day, US Ben Guerdane and ES Metlaoui played to a 0-0 draw.
