Tunisia Ligue 1’s top striker found the goal once again on Friday as Club Africain recorded a 1-0 victory at AS Gabès.
Tunisia national team forward Firas Chaouat scored the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute to lift CA to their third victory in four matches. The 29-year-old made a quick run to the near post and volleyed in from Hamza Khadhraoui’s cross to give the Tunis giants three points. The top league’s top scorer last season continues to be at the top of the list and now has seven goals in nine matches this season.
The struggles continue for ASG, who have now failed to win in their last six matches and are under a new coach following Lassad Maamar’s appointment. The hosts produced a strong effort with several opportunities calling Club Africain goalkeeper Chamakh Abdelmouhib into action, who did well to preserve his clean sheet. Abdelmouhib nearly conceded an embarrassing goal in the second half but VAR and the offsides flag came to his rescue.
CA move into top spot for now with Stade Tunisien and Esperance having opportunities over the weekend to move back into the top-2. Esperance clash with rivals Etoile du Sahel in the Tunisian Classico on Sunday while Stade Tunisien host another contender, ES Zarzis, on Saturday.
In the other match from Friday, ES Metlaoui played to a 1-1 draw with guests US Ben Guerdane.
