Stade Tunisien are increasing their hold on top spot in the Tunisia Ligue 1 Professionnelle after a 2-0 victory away from home at CA Bizertin on Wednesday.
Senegalese forward Amadou N’Diaye continued his strong start to life in Tunisia after joining Stade Tunisien from Moroccan club Union Touarga. N’Diaye received a clever pass over the top of the CAB defense and finished low past goalkeeper Youssef Maktouf in the 17th minute. The Senegalese went on to finish the scoring in second half stoppage time as ST remained undefeated in domestic league play.
The result is especially satisfying for ST, who are now four points clear of reigning champions Esperance Tunis. The Blood and Gold were held to a scoreless draw by affiliate club ES Zarzis, who continue to be a difficult opponent for all of Tunisia’s traditional powerhouse clubs.
ST remain two points clear of Club Africain, who moved into second place courtesy of a 2-1 victory over US Monastir on Tuesday.
USM’s woeful first leg defeat in the CAF Champions League over the weekend was compounded with a difficult defeat at CA. The two teams were left even at halftime following Aymen Harzi’s penalty kick in first half stoppage time. However Libya national team star defender Ali Youssef gave hosts Club Africain the victory with a second half penalty kick, their third consecutive league win.
Etoile du Sahel suffered a notable 0-2 defeat in qualifying from the CAF Confederation Cup over the weekend to Kenya’s Nairobi United, a result their supporters were not surprised by considering their team’s awful form in domestic play. Etoile fell to a 1-2 home defeat to Olympique Beja on Wednesday, leaving ESS with only nine points from ten matches to leave them a point out of the relegation zone.
The league will continue with a reduced slate of matches during the weekend while its top clubs continue to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Champions League.
