Tunisia soar past Liberia, close in on World Cup spot

Tunisia registered a routine 3-0 win over Liberia in Rades as they maintained their lead in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying from the African region. The Carthage Eagles scored in each half to take maximum points and move closer to qualifying for the World Cup next year.

As expected, Tunisia created more chances and dominated the proceedings. They went 1-0 up inside five minutes as Hazem Mastouri lobbed the ball over Liberia goalie Tommy Songo following Mark Pabai’s passing error. The Russia-based striker came close to doubling the lead, but this time Songo denied his brilliant header in the 23rd minute.

After the resumption, the home side continued to dominate the middle of the park but were limited to few chances. The visitors lacked an attacking edge as they conceded a second goal in the 66th minute when veteran midfielder Ferjani Sassi headed home a delivery from Hannibal Mejbri. Elias Saad’s brilliant free kick goal deep into the stoppage time was the icing on the cake for Tunisia.

The win consolidated the lead of the North Africans in Group H. Tunisia tops the group with 19 points, nine better than Liberia. Namibia are second with 12 points. Sami Trabelsi’s charges are on a perfect run to achieve back-to-back qualification for the World Cup.
