Despite having an apparent first half goal disallowed by VAR, DR Congo national team forward Simon Banza recovered to assist the opening goal as Trabzonspor booked a place in the final of the Turkish Cup.
Banza's assist came in a 2-0 victory over fellow Turkish Süper Lig side Göztepe. It was a classic striker's assist in that Banza was more intent on scoring but the Congolese's header from a 78th minute corner kick found Ozan Tufan whose looping finish snuck in to give Trabzonspor the edge. Oleksandr Zubkov's late goal confirmed victory for the hosts.
It has been a disappointing 2024-25 season for the 2021-22 Süper Lig champions, who sit in 7th place on the top flight table. However, Banza and his team have an opportunity to win silverware with Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray awaiting in the final on May 14.
Banza now has 3 goals and an assist in 6 cup matches for Trabzonspor to go along with 18 goals and 4 assists in 26 Süper Lig matches. Trabzonspor have little time to celebrate with a league match at home against Alanyaspor on Sunday.
