After going for two FKF Premier League matches without a win, Tusker FC rediscovered their winning formula as they defeated Mara Sugar 1-0 in a tightly contested fixture at Awendo Green Stadium on Saturday.
The Brewers’ last win in the league came on November 1, a 1-0 outcome against Bidco United. Since then, they suffered two straight defeats – 2-1 against reigning champions Kenya Police FC, and 1-0 against former champions Gor Mahia.
Knowing that defeat against Mara Sugar will complicate their ambitions for the Premier League, Tusker started the game strongly with striker Eric Kapaito missing an open sitter. However, it was a move initiated by Kapaito which resulted in Tusker’s goal.
Thomas Omolle found himself with a lot of space in the 15th minute, before drilling home what turned out to be the winner. The win enabled Tusker to jump fourth on the 18-team table with 15 points from 11 matches.
The Ruaraka-based club are now three points behind table leaders Gor Mahia, who have amassed 18 points, and two behind second-placed Homeboyz. Tusker have so far won four matches, drawn three, and lost four.
In another match, APS Bomet secured a 0-0 draw against Sofapaka in a fixture at Dandora Stadium. The promoted side went into the fixture beaming with confidence following their 4-1 win against Gor Mahia.
However, despite the precious point, APS Bomet remained rooted at the 16th position, which is a relegation spot, with nine points from 11 matches. They have managed two wins, three draws and five defeats.
Meanwhile, for Sofapaka, the draw enabled them to keep their eleventh spot with 12 points accumulated from three wins, three draws, and five defeats.
Elsewhere, Homeboyz have a great opportunity to move top of the log if they defeat KCB on Sunday. A win for the Kakamega-based side will take them to 21 points, two more than Gor Mahia, who will not be involved this weekend following the postponement of their Mashemeji derby against AFC Leopards.
