Ugandan football will mark a historic milestone this this evening as the Uganda U-17 national team, fondly known as The Cubs, make their long-awaited debut at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
The young stars open their campaign on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, with a highly anticipated clash against Canada at 6:45 PM (EAT) a match that symbolizes Uganda’s first-ever step onto the global stage at this level.
As part of their final build-up, the Cubs participated in the Dubai Youth Challenge Cup hosted at Al Hamriya Cultural and Sports Club. Despite recording a 1-1 draw with Venezuela and narrow losses to Panama (1-2) and Paraguay (2-3), the experience provided valuable lessons and competitive sharpness ahead of their World Cup debut.
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo, who also serves as co-coach at KCCA FC, expressed full belief in his side’s readiness for the task ahead.
“We are more than ready for action. The build-up tournament helped us identify our strengths and improve our combinations. The players are mentally and physically set for the challenge ahead,” he affirmed.
The final squad reflects a balanced blend of technical ability, power, and youthful hunger. Adrian Mukwanga (Vipers SC JT), Edrisah Waibi (Buddo SS), and Gilbert Mazige (NEC FC JT) will share goalkeeping duties.
Captain Richard Okello (BUL FC JT) leads a talented group featuring midfield orchestrator Brian Jjara (KCCA FC), creative spark Isima Magala (Masaka Sunshine FC), and forward threats James Bogere (Masaka Sunshine FC) and Simon Wanyama (Bukedea Comprehensive).
Drawn in Group K alongside Canada, Chile, and France, Uganda faces a challenging but inspiring path. For Ssenyondo and his young charges, this tournament is not only about competition, it’s about making history and showcasing the bright future of Ugandan football on the world stage.
