Uganda conceded two late goals as Canada overturned a 0-1 deficit to triumph 2-1 in their Group K opener from the 2025 U-17 World Cup on Wednesday.
The East African nation enjoyed a historical day in their footballing history, debuting at a FIFA tournament for the first time in any age group. And it was a dream start for the Cubs after star forward James Bogere opened the scoring in the 25th minute for a halftime lead.
After doing well to contain the Canadian attack in the first half, it appeared that the Cubs were set to hold on for at least a point from their opener. However, Elijah Roche equalized in the 88th minute with a powerful header from a corner kick to set in motion a late collapse for the African side.
Deep into second half stoppage time, a reckless challenge in the Ugandan penalty area on Canada substitute Marius Aiyenero allowed the forward to finish off the comeback with a spot kick and secure victory.
Uganda will next face Chile in their second Group K match on Saturday, which could prove decisive considering the Cubs will finish up against European powerhouse France next Tuesday.
