U-17 World Cup: Uganda stun France to advance

The Uganda Cubs have made history by qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup knockout stages for the first time at their debut appearance following Tuesday’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over France on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar.

Brian Ssenyondo’s side entered the match knowing that only a win would keep their dreams alive—and they delivered with precision, determination, and composure.

The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when captain Hamza Ssengooba’s clever cut-back found danger man James Bogere, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Uganda the lead. The decisive move was brilliantly orchestrated from the right flank by the ever-dangerous Elvis Torach, whose run and delivery set the stage for the historic goal.

From that moment on, the Cubs showcased remarkable defensive discipline and tactical awareness, successfully keeping a relentless French side at bay until the final whistle. Their resilience ensured that the 1-0 scoreline held, sealing Uganda’s place in the knockout stage.

The victory also saw the Cubs finish third in Group K with four points, behind France and Canada on goal difference—both also on four points but ahead on goal difference. This milestone represents a monumental achievement for Uganda’s U-17 program, highlighting the growth, talent, and potential of the nation’s youth football.

Uganda’s journey in Qatar has been defined by determination. After a 1-1 draw with Chile and a narrow 2-1 loss to Canada, the Cubs approached the clash against France with everything to play for. Their ability to rise to the occasion demonstrated maturity and a fighting spirit beyond their years.

With history now made, the Uganda Cubs will head into the knockout stages with confidence, carrying the hopes of a nation as they aim to continue their remarkable run.
