Zambia U-17 national team coach Dennis Makinka has stressed knockout football demands a different tactical shift as they prepare to face Mali in the Round of 32 fixture of the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
Both teams will arrive at this stage with contrasting journeys but equally strong ambitions, setting up a compelling all-African showdown in Doha. The Junior Chipolopolo entered the knockouts unbeaten after a powerful Group H campaign built on organisation, discipline, and attacking flair.
Zambia opened the tournament with a confident win over Indonesia, followed by a dominant 5-2 victory against Honduras. Their final group match, a composed 1-1 draw with four-time champions Brazil.
Zambia advanced with seven points. On the other hand, Mali progressed from Group L after a mixed but strong run that highlighted their trademark physicality and direct play.
Mali began with a commanding victory over New Zealand, suffered a setback against Austria, but responded with a convincing 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia.
“Group stages are different from knockout stages. In knockouts, you have to win the game. The mentality and aggressiveness will stay, but tactically we will be different.” Said Makinka as quoted by FAZ Media.
“We know their (Mali) style; physical and quick on the ball. We have to match that. We played Brazil in a similar manner, and the boys showed they can rise to the challenge. Concentration will be key, especially at the back.”
Speaking on behalf of the players, forward Lukonde Mwale saluted the team’s unity and strong bond ahead of the match. Mwale also took time to reflect on his personal form in the group stage.
“I started the tournament well, had a tough game against Honduras, but bounced back versus Brazil. I want to keep that form going into the Mali match.” Mwale said. “There’s no fear. We have capable leaders, a strong technical bench, and a united squad. The bond we’ve built is strong.
“We’ll take it game by game, but I believe we can reach the finals. We are not coming home anytime soon, we hope to be here in Qatar until the 27th.”
The winner of this encounter will face either Morocco or the USA in the Round of 16.
