Ghana’s dream of reaching the 2025 FIFA World Cup in Chile this year, will face stiffer opposition in the quarterfinals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations against hosts Egypt on Monday.
The Black Satellites qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2025 U-20 AFCON after recording two wins and a draw to top Group C on seven points. Ghana’s opener ended 1-1 against DR Congo before 1-0 wins against defending champions Senegal and Central Africa Republic in the second and final games respectively.
Egypt on the other hand qualified as one of the third-best countries after finishing third in Group A with seven points after four matches.
Reflecting on the upcoming tie against Egypt, Ghana U-20 national team coach Desmond Ofei said: “This is going to be like a final for us. It’s a qualifier for the World Cup and that means everything. We are not just playing a nation; we are also playing against history.
“Egypt is a decent and good side. Ghanaians know their strengths. They have some very technically gifted players.
“I respect the team, but I also believe we have quality. And we know our quality.”
“We need to stay true to our values, stay true to our DNA, and stay true to our philosophy. My boys are hungry for success. They’re going to put everything out there on the field.
“They [players] want to show Ghana that they are the future of our football. Tomorrow, they will give their best. We are prepared for anything—extra time, penalties, whatever comes. But we are coming into this with a clear game plan, and we aim to execute it with strength and belief," he added.
The semifinalists will gain automatic qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup with former winners Ghana looking to chase for the ticket.
The clash at the New Suez Stadium promises to be a thrilling encounter, with everything to play for and the future of Ghanaian footballers eager to shine. The match is scheduled to start at 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT).
