South Africa U-20 head coach, Raymond Mdaka, has revealed the tactical adjustments and mental fortitude that propelled his Amajita troops to victory over Sierra Leone in their TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations clash.

SA hammered Sierra Leone 4-1 in a Group A encounter on Tuesday evening in Ismaila.

Jody Ahshene's 13th-minute strike gave Amajita an early advantage. Although Sierra Leone fought back in the second half through Momoh Kamara’s goal, a brace from substitute Thabang Mahlangu sealed the win for SA, with Neo Rapoo also adding to the scoresheet for Amajita.

This result places South Africa second in Group A, behind Sierra Leone.

Addressing the media after the game, SA U-20 coach Mdaka highlighted his team’s ability to overcome a challenging first half and capitalise on their opportunities after the break.

“There is always a plan even before you go to the game, but what made us a bit relaxed was struggling a bit in the first half [and then scoring the goal] when they were trying to put pressure on us,” said Mdaka.

“When we came back in the second half, we were able to settle. You see, when you come back and settle out of pressure, then it gives courage to say we still have it, and indeed it worked for us.

“We were able to score a number of goals in the second half, and it's quite a good result, and there is some motivation on its own for the boys," added Mdaka.
