Another late Daniel Bameyi penalty gave Nigeria the result they needed on Sunday evening at the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile as the Flying Eagles played Colombia to a 1-1 draw to conclude play in Group F.
The defender and captain showed ice cold composure after a late handball gave Nigeria a crucial penalty kick. Bameyi sent Colombia goalkeeper Jordan Garcia the wrong way for a result that was good enough to secure their ticket to the knockout stages.
It was shaping up to be a frustrating evening for the Flying Eagles at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca after hitting the woodwork three times over the course of the match. Colombia went ahead with a goal from Kéner González early in the second half.
But the Flying Eagles continued to fight until the end with the tension growing. A 0-2 defeat would have eliminated them from the competition but they had Colombia on the defensive in the final stage of the match before a stroke of fortune went their way with the handball in the Colombian penalty area.
Nigeria advance as one of the best third place teams to the Round of 16, where they will face Group D winners Argentina on Wednesday in Santiago.
