Morocco are becoming the story of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after outclassing another traditional powerhouse with Wednesday evening’s 2-1 victory over Brazil.
Othmane Maamma’s excellent 60th minute volley was the decisive moment to spark another victory after Morocco defeated Spain in their Group C opener, clinching top spot in the group with one match remaining. Yassir Zabiri put the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations runners-up beyond reach.
A strong defensive performance kept the match level through the first half with Brazil looking like the more dangerous team. But Morocco turned the tide after the halftime break and Maamma’s acrobatic strike from Gessime Yassine’s cross was a crucial moment in the match.
Yassine was also instrumental in the second goal scored in the 76th minute. Winning the ball forty yards from goal with a strong challenge, Yassine drew a couple of Brazilian defenders with his dribbling run and laid a pass off to the left wing, where Zabiri was wide open to produce a powerful finish just inside the far post.
Brazil found a late goal with Iago Teodoro’s penalty kick in stoppage time but it was too little too late for Brazil, who will now likely need to defeat Spain to advance in their final Group C match. Morocco close out their group stage against Mexico, in second place but four points back of the North African nation.
