Zambia U-17 national women’s team captain Mercy Chipasula has revealed the team’s spirit heading into the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup is very high as they target to go past the group stages of the tournament in Morocco.
During the last edition, Zambia failed to go past the group stages. The Copper Princesses have pitched in camp in Morocco preparing for the tournament. They have been pooled in Group F alongside Japan, New Zealand, and Paraguay.
“Everyone is pushing. We were working on shooting on goal, the mistakes that we were making at the last World Cup, and also working on the strikers’ movement with the ball. The team spirit is high, and we are ready to face Paraguay,” Chipasula told FAZ Media as quoted by Bola News.
“Me and my friends, we are very much ready; even right now we are ready to play. To the fans, we won’t disappoint you. Don’t give up; we are going to fight for our country. Continue supporting us; we will win our first game.”
The Copper Princesses are making a return to the FIFA World Cup for a record third time having been at the biggest showpiece in 2014, 2024 and 2025. Group F will be based in Salé, which is a city in northwestern Morocco, on the right bank of the Bou Regreg River.
Zambia’s opening match is on 19 October against Paraguay at the Football Academy Mohammed VI (Pitch 3) in Sale before facing Japan three days later at the same venue. Their final game will be against New Zealand at the Football Academy Mohammed VI (Pitch 2).
Top two teams in each group will qualify to the knockout stages of the tournament.
