Uche Ikpeazu thrilled to join Uganda squad ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Uganda Cranes forward Uche Ikpeazu has expressed immense excitement after officially joining the national team for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, calling the opportunity a “big privilege” following years of setbacks.

Born in the UK to Ugandan and Nigerian parents, Ikpeazu has previously been summoned to the Cranes but missed out due to injuries, illness, and other unforeseen challenges. This call-up is particularly special, as it marks his first time in Uganda in nearly two decades.

“It feels good; it’s been a long time coming,” Ikpeazu said after completing his first training session at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. “Every time I was called up before, something happened — injuries, COVID-19 last time — so to finally be here with the national team and in the country after so many years is amazing. I’m excited.”

The 30-year-old striker, who plays his club football in Scotland with St Johnstone, praised the warm welcome from both his teammates and the coaching staff, noting that settling into camp has been smooth.

“I’ve got the first training session out of the way, and there’s been a lot of team bonding. It’s important to build chemistry with the boys. I feel good and fit,” he added. “Playing for the national team is a privilege. I want to make a difference and help lift the team in any way I can.”

Ikpeazu revealed that he has been closely following the Cranes’ performances through match highlights and live games, giving him a good understanding of coach Paul Put’s tactical approach. He also expressed admiration for the passionate support of Ugandan fans.

“I’ve watched a lot of games before coming here to understand the team’s style and the coach’s philosophy,” he explained. “The fans are incredible, the stadium is always packed, and I can’t wait to experience that atmosphere.”

Uganda is set to face Mozambique on Friday, September 5, before taking on Somalia on September 8, with both matches at Namboole. The Cranes are aiming to climb up the Group G standings, where they currently sit fourth.
