Nigeria women's national team forward Uchenna Kanu scored her first goal of the 2025 NWSL season on Saturday evening but it wasn’t enough to prevent Racing Louisville from suffering a 2-4 away defeat to Kansas City Current at the CPKC Stadium.
The home team wasted no time, going up 1-0 in the 2nd minute thanks to an own goal from Lauren Milliet. Kansas City kept the pressure on throughout the first half, with Michelle Cooper and Bia Zaneratto each adding a goal to give them a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.
Racing Louisville attempted a comeback in the second half when Janine Beckie pulled one back in the 62nd minute. Kanu, who was subbed on for Courtney Petersen in the 87th minute, made an immediate impact by heading home from Beckie’s corner just one minute later to make it 3-2.
However, any hopes of a dramatic late equalizer were dashed when Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga scored in stoppage time to secure the 4-2 win for Kansas City. This goal is Kanu's first of the season for Racing Louisville, where she's now in her third year since joining from Mexico's UANL Tigres.
Despite a standout performance last year with five goals in 12 appearances, she has only managed to score once in her five games this season.
Racing Louisville currently sit sixth on the NWSL table with 17 points from 12 matches. They will look to bounce back when they face Orlando Pride on June 21.
