Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Charles Lukwago is set for a fresh challenge in the South African top flight after agreeing to join newly formed club Siwelele FC from second division side Venda FC.

The experienced shot-stopper, who has been a mainstay for the national team in recent years, is currently undergoing medical tests before completing the move.

Siwelele FC is the latest entrant in South African football, formed following the acquisition of SuperSport United for a reported R50 million at the end of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

The newly rebranded club is looking to make a strong statement in its debut season, and Lukwago’s signing is expected to bring leadership and international pedigree to their squad.

This website earlier reported that Lukwago was in advanced talks with APR FC, the Rwandan Premier League giants, but the move fell through at the final stages. He then shifted focus to South Africa, where negotiations with Siwelele progressed quickly.

Lukwago brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously featured for KCCA FC, Proline FC, Lweza United, the now-defunct SC Victoria University, and St George FC in the Ethiopian Premier League.

His move to Siwelele FC adds to the growing list of Ugandan goalkeepers plying their trade in the South African Premier Division. He joins Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns), Salim Jamal Magoola (Richards Bay), and Isima Watenga (Golden Arrows) as Ugandan custodians in the league.

With Uganda Cranes targeting a strong run in the upcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, Lukwago’s move to a competitive league is expected to further sharpen his form and experience on the big stage.
