Co-hosts Uganda Cranes now know their Group C opponents for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, scheduled to run from August 2-30, 2025 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Following the completion of the final round of qualification matches, Group C has been confirmed to include: Uganda (hosts) Niger, Guinea, Algeria and South Africa. The final two teams to seal their spots in the group were Algeria and South Africa, both of whom advanced after dramatic two-legged encounters.
Algeria booked their place with a dominant 3-0 victory over The Gambia in the second leg, having drawn the first leg 0-0. The North Africans advance 3-0 on aggregate, marking their return to the CHAN finals with authority.
Meanwhile, South Africa overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Malawi, winning 2-0 in the return leg to progress 2-1 on aggregate. The Bafana Bafana will be making a strong return to the CHAN tournament, eager to prove their domestic league talent on the continental stage. With the addition of these two powerhouses of African football, Group C is now one of the most competitive pools of the tournament.
Uganda, as one of the three co-hosts, will enjoy a home advantage, but face a stern test against seasoned sides like Guinea, Algeria, and South Africa. This will be Uganda’s seventh CHAN appearance, and the Cranes will be aiming to advance from the group stage for the first time in their history, buoyed by home support and familiarity with local conditions.
The tournament will showcase players who ply their trade in domestic leagues, offering a platform for emerging talent across the continent.
