The Uganda Cranes’ preparations for their international friendlies against Chad and Morocco have been hit by a major setback, with key duo Rogers Mato and Aziz Kayondo ruled out due to injuries.
The two players, who ply their trade in Europe, picked up knocks over the weekend while representing their respective clubs and will now miss what was meant to be the final international window before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mato, who has been in excellent form for Vardar FC in North Macedonia, was on target as his side defeated Tikves 3–1 on Sunday. Unfortunately, the pacey forward picked up an injury during the same match, forcing him off and sidelining him from both club and national team duties for the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, Aziz Kayondo suffered a concussion during Slovan Liberec’s commanding 6–0 win over ten-man Karviná.
The left-back has been one of coach Paul Joseph Put’s most trusted options, providing defensive stability and consistent attacking support down the flank.
Losing both players comes at a difficult time for the national team, as Put continues to refine his squad ahead of next month’s AFCON tournament.
Their absence not only disrupts the Cranes’ balance but also tests the squad’s depth in key areas.
The Belgian tactician will now look to reshuffle his options and possibly hand opportunities to emerging talents eager to prove their worth on the international stage.
Uganda’s friendly against Morocco, Africa’s top-ranked nation, was expected to be a crucial benchmark for the Cranes’ readiness and resilience ahead of continental action. However, with two of their most consistent performers unavailable, the technical team faces a new challenge in maintaining competitiveness and team cohesion.
