Uganda Cup: Late blitz sends Express FC through to quarterfinals in style

Express FC turned on the style when it mattered most, brushing aside Red Devo FC with a commanding 4-0 victory under the Nakivubo floodlights to seal the final spot in the Stanbic Uganda Cup quarterfinals.

The Red Eagles had to be patient before asserting their authority, but once they found their rhythm, there was no stopping them.

Early intent was evident, with Mikidad Ssenyonga rattling the crossbar midway through the first half in a warning of what was to come.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 35th minute. Henry Wamala reacted quickest in the box, guiding home from close range after a well-crafted delivery by Blanchar Mulamba to give Express a deserved lead heading into the break.

Despite controlling proceedings for large spells in the second half, Express struggled to extend their advantage, with Red Devo holding firm and keeping the contest alive deep into the game.

However, the tide decisively turned in the closing minutes. Introduced from the bench, Kenneth Kimera made an instant impact, calmly finishing in the 88th minute to double the lead. Barely a minute later, he struck again, this time with confidence and precision, to put the result beyond doubt with a quickfire brace.

There was still time for Herbert Asiimwe to add further gloss to the scoreline, the substitute finding the net in stoppage time to cap off a ruthless late surge and complete the emphatic win.

The Red Eagles appear to be regaining momentum, now recording back-to-back wins with an impressive seven goals scored and just one conceded.

Uganda Cup quarterfinalists confirmed

Express FC now join Vipers SC, Kitara FC, Happy Boys Kagaba, KCCA FC, NEC FC, and URA FC in the last eight, rounding off a competitive quarterfinal line-up in this year’s 52nd edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
