Playing in what was effectively Police’s own backyard, Lugazi showed maturity, discipline, and cutting edge to complete a memorable cup afternoon and sweet revenge. The win mirrored their recent league defeat to Police by the same scoreline, adding extra significance for Lugazi and head coach Simon Peter Mugerwa, a former Police FC tactician.
The match started cautiously, with both sides feeling each other out. Police FC threatened first through Charles Bbaale, whose driven cross in the 19th minute narrowly missed Bedia Ikamba in the box.
Lugazi, however, remained compact, soaking up pressure and growing into the contest.
Goalkeeper Kasibante emerged as Police’s hero in the first half, pulling off a series of outstanding saves.
He denied Umaru Kyebatala twice in quick succession, including a point-blank stop in the 35th minute, to keep the game goalless at the break.
The visitors struck decisively after halftime. In the 61st minute, Umar Kyebatala finally beat the Police resistance, calmly finishing to give Lugazi a deserved lead.
Just three minutes later, Abdul Kalalanzi doubled the advantage with a superb curling effort from the right, stunning the home crowd and putting Lugazi firmly in control.
Police attempted a response with a double substitution in the 67th minute, and their pressure eventually paid off when Joseph Othieno turned the ball into his own net in the 74th minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
The final stages were tense, with Police pushing for an equaliser and Lugazi defending deep and resolutely. A yellow card to Daniel Jakony and late substitutions failed to shift the momentum, as Lugazi held on through five minutes of added time.
At the final whistle, it was jubilation for Lugazi FC and heartbreak for Police FC, who bowed out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
For Lugazi, it was more than just progression, it was a statement win, earned with grit, composure, and a touch of poetic justice.
