Uganda land in Qatar to begin historic FIFA U17 World Cup campaign

The Uganda U17 Men’s National Team the Cubs have safely touched down in Doha, Qatar, marking the beginning of their historic participation in the FIFA U17 World Cup, the nation’s first-ever appearance at the global showpiece.

The team departed Dubai early Saturday after concluding a productive nine-day training camp that featured three high-profile international friendlies against Venezuela, Panama, and Paraguay U17 teams.

Speaking before departure, assistant captain Walusimbi Abubakali expressed confidence in the team’s readiness and highlighted the value of the friendlies in boosting their experience and confidence.

“This was our last sweat in Dubai, now we head to Qatar. The friendly matches gave us a good test and great experience we have really learned lessons from them,” Walusimbi said.

He further noted that the players have adapted well to the weather and atmosphere, shifting their mindset fully toward competitive action.

“The weather here is actually not too different from home, so we’ll not face many challenges with it. We’ve already switched from friendly game mode to competition mode, and I can promise we’ll do our best to represent Uganda well,” he added.

Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo, who unveiled the final 21-man squad before the team’s departure, expressed optimism and belief in the group chosen to fly Uganda’s flag high.

“We believe this is the best squad to represent us in Qatar,” Ssenyondo noted. “We have only added a few new players who weren’t with us during AFCON, but the core of the team has been maintained.”

Okello Richard will captain the side, assisted by Walusimbi Abubakali, Sengooba Hamuza, and Bogere James.

The Cubs are based at Holiday Villa Hotel and Residence – City Center Doha and will open their World Cup campaign against Canada on Wednesday, 5th November 2025, with kickoff set for 6:45 pm (local time and EAT).
