Uganda make technical team switch as Ssimbwa departs ahead of AFCON

Sam Ssimbwa’s tenure as assistant coach of the Uganda Cranes has ended following the expiry of his contract, bringing an abrupt close to his chapter on the national team bench.

With the Africa Cup of Nations fast approaching, the federation has swiftly moved to fill the gap, appointing experienced tactician Fred Muhumuza as Ssimbwa’s immediate successor.

According to Swift Sports, Muhumuza takes charge without delay as preparations intensify.

Ssimbwa had been appointed in November 2023 as the right-hand man to head coach Paul Put.

Uganda are gearing up for AFCON campaign

However, despite Put recently committing to a fresh two-and-a-half-year deal, Ssimbwa exits his role ahead of the continental showpiece.

Muhumuza’s elevation comes on the back of an impressive coaching résumé. He guided Vipers SC to a domestic double last season alongside John Ayala Luyinda, cementing his place among the country’s top coaching minds. Earlier this year, he co-led the Uganda CHAN squad with Morley Byekwaso to a memorable quarterfinal finish.

A former midfielder at SC Villa and Victors, Muhumuza has previously coached at URA FC, Bumate United, and Tooro Province in the FUFA Drum, giving him a well-rounded background in Ugandan football.

Uganda are gearing up for a challenging AFCON campaign in Morocco, where they’ll battle Nigeria, Tunisia, and neighbors Tanzania in Group C.

Head coach Paul Put is expected to unveil the final Cranes squad soon as Uganda shifts into full preparation mode for the prestigious tournament.
