Referee Mashood Ssali officiated his final game on Monday, January 6 as Vipers SC edged Maroons FC 1-0 in an Uganda Premier League match at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Hailed as one of Uganda’s most accomplished referees, Ssali’s career began in 2000 after completing Senior Six. Over the years, he gained immense respect for his consistency and integrity, including a decade as a FIFA-accredited referee since 2014.

After the match, Ssali received a grand farewell. Players from both teams formed a guard of honor as he walked onto the pitch, joined by fellow referees waving flags in tribute. Team captains Milton Karisa (Vipers) and Ronald Orombi (Maroons) also presented him with signed jerseys to commemorate the occasion.

The match was decided in the first half when Ssali awarded an indirect free kick after a high challenge on Vipers' Rogers Torach. Moses Waiswa converted the opportunity, sealing the victory for the home side. Initially set to retire on December 31, 2024, Ssali postponed his farewell due to the CHAN Qualifiers, making this fixture his official swan song.

Ssali’s illustrious career included officiating in prestigious tournaments such as the AFCON U17, CAF inter-club competitions, AFCON qualifiers, and World Cup qualifiers.

His retirement marks the end of an era, following the departure of another Ugandan referee, Ali Sabila Chelangat, last year. Mashood Ssali leaves behind a legacy of professionalism and excellence that will inspire future generations of referees.
