Express FC turned on the style at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with a dominant 4-1 victory over Mbarara City to soar into fourth place on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table as Matchday Six kicked off on Wednesday.
The Red Eagles wasted no time asserting control, surging into a commanding 3-0 halftime lead. Rashid Kawawa set the tone in the 11th minute when his strike took a deflection past the Mbarara goalkeeper. Minutes later, Richard Basangwa rose highest to nod home Kawawa’s cross, doubling Express’ advantage near the half-hour mark.
Henry Wamala’s creativity then paved the way for Ssenonga Kagawa to add a third before the break, putting the result beyond doubt early. Kagawa completed his brace in the 67th minute, calmly finishing to make it 4-0 for the hosts.
Mbarara City managed a late consolation through substitute Gabriel Eragu in the 71st minute, but it was too little, too late for the Ankole Lions.
The emphatic win marked only Express’ second triumph of the season but saw them rise five spots up to fourth place on eight points. In contrast, Mbarara City remained trapped in the relegation zone with just two points from six outings.
Meanwhile, over in Luzira, URA FC and Maroons FC battled to a goalless draw the Tax Collectors’ fifth stalemate in as many matches this campaign. The result left URA two places behind Express, while Maroons sit a further five spots down, both teams struggling to turn draws into wins.
Matchday Six continues on Thursday, featuring a forces’ derby between UPDF and Police FC in Bombo, while SC Villa host high-flying Kitara FC at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba.
