UPL: Vipers held by Kitara as Tusubira strikes in Lugazi-Entebbe stalemate

Matchday 22 of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL) delivered two draws on Friday, with the title race tightening at the top and mid-table sides continuing to search for consistency.

At St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, league leaders Vipers SC were frustrated to a goalless draw by second-placed Kitara FC in a highly anticipated clash played under the floodlights.

Despite a strong turnout, the contest lacked the cutting edge expected from the division’s top two sides.

Kitara began brightly, dictating the early tempo, but Vipers stayed compact at the back to deny them space.

The hosts nearly found a breakthrough midway through the first half when Kevin Dasylva Bady got a sight at goal, but his effort failed to trouble the scoreboard as both teams went into the break level.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with cautious play dominating proceedings.

Kitara’s Yunus Sibira showed glimpses of creativity, yet neither side managed to carve out clear chances, ultimately settling for a point apiece.

The stalemate sees Vipers maintain their lead at the summit with 51 points, while Kitara remain in second on 47, keeping the gap at four points.

Notably, Kitara have now collected four points from Vipers this season, an impressive return that includes a forfeited first-leg victory after Vipers failed to honour the fixture due to a league format dispute.

Elsewhere in Najjembe, Lugazi FC and Entebbe UPPC also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming inside an action-packed opening ten minutes.

Entebbe made a perfect start when Abraham Kakensa Tusubira opened his account, giving the visitors an early advantage. However, Lugazi responded almost immediately through Billy Wabwire, whose quick equaliser restored parity and set the tone for a competitive encounter.

After the early fireworks, the game gradually settled into a more tactical battle, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Changes in the second half failed to inject the desired attacking spark, as the match drifted to a stalemate.

The result means Entebbe UPPC complete a superior head-to-head record over Lugazi this season, having secured four points from the two meetings following their earlier 2-1 victory.

However, both sides extended their winless runs to five matches, underlining their recent struggles.

In the standings, Entebbe UPPC remain sixth with 37 points, while Lugazi sit 12th on 19 points, just above the relegation zone.

Looking ahead, Vipers will face SC Villa on April 15, with Kitara set to visit KCCA FC on April 17. Lugazi travel to Calvary, while Entebbe UPPC will be away to Buhimba in their next outings.
