Usama Arafat backs Uganda Cranes to shine on home soil in CHAN 2024 ‘Group of Death’

Uganda Cranes winger Usama Arafat is confident that the team can rise to the occasion despite being drawn into what many are calling the “Group of Death” ahead of the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.

Speaking after the team’s second non-residential training session on Tuesday at Luzira Prison Grounds, Arafat acknowledged the enormity of the challenge but expressed belief in the squad’s steady preparations.

“We’ve been pitted in a very strong group, but as hosts, we’re preparing according to the toughness of the games to achieve our targeted goals,” Arafat said.

Uganda is placed in Group C alongside tournament heavyweights Algeria, Guinea, South Africa, and Niger—nations with deep CHAN pedigree. Algeria, in particular, finished as runners-up in the most recent edition and will be Uganda’s opening opponent.

The Cranes will kick off their campaign on August 4 at the iconic Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, with a high-stakes clash against Algeria at 8 PM. It marks the beginning of a historic opportunity for Uganda, a nation yet to advance past the group stages in any previous CHAN tournament.

But with the advantage of home support and leadership from coaches Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso, there is renewed optimism within the camp.

Namboole will also host a quarterfinal and a semifinal match during the tournament, offering Ugandan fans further chances to rally behind their team on home turf.

Originally slated for 2024, CHAN 2025 was rescheduled and will now be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. This edition will feature 19 teams and remains exclusive to players competing in their national domestic leagues.
