Despite another season of inconsistency at struggling Manchester United, goalkeeper André Onana continues to receive backing from major figures in football and one of his admirers includes legendary United keeper Edwin van der Sar.
The Cameroon national team star continues to deliver too many moments of madness for every brilliant save. While Van der Sar acknowledged that it has not been a stellar campaign for Onana, he had many positive things to say about the former Ajax and Inter Milan shot stopper in an interview with former Australia national team goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer for Optus Sport.
"He has many tremendous qualities. He's quick, he's fast, he's strong. A good mentality."
"So I'm a little surprised how the season is going for him. It's up and down, he's making a bit too many mistakes. He knows it himself. But I think he's a strong character. After the Lyon game where he conceded four goals, the week after he put up a strong performance...He will get over it."
Despite his struggles this season for a United side that has slipped all the way down to 16th position on the Premier League table, Onana will have a chance to win a major trophy. United have reached the UEFA Europa League final where they will play Tottenham in Bilbao, Spain on May 21.
After previously finishing as runner-up in the 2016-17 edition with Ajax as well as in the UEFA Champions League with Inter during the 2022-23 season, Onana will look to finally capture his first piece of European silverware.
