The long-awaited arrival of Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) in South African football has cleared its final hurdle. Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has confirmed that National Treasury has officially transferred the necessary funds to the South African Football Association (SAFA) to implement the technology starting next season.
The announcement comes after years of mounting pressure from fans and clubs alike, fueled by a perceived decline in the standard of officiating in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Addressing a DSAC Portfolio media briefing on Wednesday, a defiant McKenzie made it clear that the government has fulfilled its mandate.
“I have the proof of payment in my hand,” McKenzie stated. “Treasury has given us permission; we have given the money for VAR to SAFA. They must just pay. The department can do no more. I have kept my promise!”
The Minister noted that the implementation followed a rigorous vetting process led by a technical team of refereeing legends, including Daniel Bennett, Victor Gomes, Jerome Damon, and Abdul Ibrahim. The team evaluated various FIFA-approved technology providers to ensure the local game aligns with international standards.
The R80-million project wasn’t rushed. McKenzie revealed that the department and SAFA conducted extensive international benchmarking, engaging with La Liga President Javier Tebas in Spain and Premier League Productions in the UK.
“I can’t enjoy football anymore,” McKenzie admitted, describing himself as a “super fan.” “Whenever a referee makes a mistake, people look at me and ask, ‘Where is VAR?’ Football is evolving. We need to make sure what we deliver in South Africa next season is top-class.”
While the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) led the procurement and funding phases, the Minister emphasised that the execution now rests solely with SAFA and CEO Lydia Monyapao.
“We are ready. We’ve kept our promise of VAR,” McKenzie concluded. “I don’t want to hear somebody asking me where it is. I have done my bit; the Deputy Minister has done her bit. We have delivered.”
The technology is expected to be fully operational for the start of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
