Comoros are starting all over again trying to rise from the pain of an underwhelming 2025 AFCON appearance in Morocco under previous coach Stefano Cusin.

The islanders, boasting quality players predominantly from the Diaspora, lost 2-0 to the Atlas Lions then drew against Mali and Zambia before bowing out from the group-stage of the AFCON finals.

Velud sets high targets for Comoros

Now, with Velud named the new man in charge, there is an air of optimism of a new football dawn in the island nation ahead of the FIFA Series. The veteran trainer set targets soon after being appointed.

“Comoros have shown that they can be ambitious at the level of the World Cup qualifiers,” the coach said after his unveiling.

“The mandatory objective is to qualify for the next AFCON. I think that regular participation of Comoros in AFCON is very important for visibility. At the level of the margin of progression of football, it is very important to qualify all the time for AFCON.”

Comoros will open the series with a match against Kazakhstan on Wednesday at Astana Arena in Moroni. Kick-off is 12 Comoros time.

Depending on the outcome of the first match, the islanders are scheduled to play their second game against fellow Africans, Namibia, at the same venue on March 31 2026.
