Veteran French coach Claude Le Roy has revealed the nations that stand a chance of coursing a stare and could eventually win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year.

The former Ghana and DR Congo head coach is a household name in Africa with two stints at Cameroon and DR Congo before handling Senegal, Togo and Congo Brazzaville in a career that has spanned over four decades.

Le Roy, 77, believes the battle for the AFCON title will be fierce and he sees hosts Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire as strong contenders, while Nigeria and South Africa can also not be underestimated.

“Logically, they (Morocco) are the biggest favorites,” Le Roy told LeSitelnfo.

“Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Algeria… Egypt is always a formidable opponent in this competition. We must also be careful with South Africa, which continues to progress thanks to a very good coach. Cameroon is also one of the competitors who are always difficult to beat.” He said.

Le Roy famously led Cameroon to victory at the 1988 AFCON—the last time Morocco hosted the tournament—defeating Nigeria 1-0 in the final, thanks to an Emmanuel Kundé penalty.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted between December 2025 and January 2026.
