Victor Boniface: Werden Bremen reveal date for return from injury

Ahead of their Bundesliga fixture after the international break against RB Leipzig at the Weser Stadium on Saturday, SV Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has confirmed the return of Nigeria forward Victor Boniface from injury.

The 25-year-old marksman underwent surgery in January after sustaining a serious knee injury while on duty for the “Green and Whites.”

While initial medical assessments suggested his season was prematurely over, Boniface defied the odds by returning to full team training this week, potentially putting him in contention for the final stretch of the campaign.

Boniface indicated he wants to help Bremen

“First of all, I’m happy to have met him. We had a long talk. He indicated that he wants to help us in our fight to stay in the league. For me, that offers another option, but not for this weekend,” said Thioune as quoted by Werder Bremen website.

“In the coming weeks, we’re playing against teams of similar strength, and if we can give Victor a few minutes of playing time, that could be a big help and a real asset for us.”

Recently, Boniface took to his social media pages to express relief on his return from injury. The Super Eagles striker admitted the three-month journey to recovery has been a test of patience.

“I am happy to be back after three months out. I am now looking forward to what we can achieve at the end of the season,” Boniface shared.

Before injury he had two assists in 11 league matches

Boniface joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. Before his injury setback, he had registered two assists in 11 league appearances, providing a physical presence in the Bremen attack that has been sorely missed during his absence.

His return comes at a critical juncture for the club. Werder Bremen currently languishes in 14th place on the Bundesliga table, sitting on 28 points from 27 matches.

With only seven rounds of fixtures remaining and a slender four-point cushion over the relegation zone, Boniface’s availability could be the “X-factor” in securing their top-flight status.
