Nigerian forward Victor Boniface will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 German Bundesliga season as he undergoes surgery on his injured knee this Saturday.
The announcement was made on Saturday by Werder Bremen, the club Boniface joined on loan from fellow Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen during the 2025 summer transfer window. The 25-year-old has been sidelined since December following a severe knee-to-knee challenge during a training session. Head coach Horst Steffen described the incident as a “painful impact” that initially resulted in a heavy contusion.
Although the club originally hoped for a quick recovery, the injury exacerbated recurring knee issues that have long plagued the forward, including a cartilage damage that had reportedly caused a move to AC Milan to collapse over the summer.
Peter Niemeyer, Head of Professional Football at Werder Bremen, explained that after consulting with medical specialists, it was determined that the player requires surgery and will be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.
“We are pleased that we have now found a solution and that Victor will undergo surgery. This provides clarity for all parties. Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer expect Victor to play for Werder this season.”
On Friday, Boniface visited Prof. Dr. Christian Fink in Innsbruck, Austria—a renowned specialist—regarding his persistent knee problems. Dr. Fink’s recommendation aligns with the assessments from team doctors at both Werder Bremen and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Following the consultation, Boniface agreed to proceed with the surgery.
The forward has registered two assists in 12 appearances for “The Greens” this season.
Despite the injury, the loan agreement between Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen will remain in effect until the end of the season.
