Double-winning champions Vipers SC will soon have to make a major decision regarding the future of experienced midfielder Paul Patrick Mbowa, whose contract expires at the end of this month.

Mbowa joined the Venoms ahead of the 2023/24 season from URA FC on a two-year deal. In his first season at Kitende, the defensive midfielder quickly established himself as a key figure in the team, playing a pivotal role in their league and cup double.

His consistency and leadership in midfield were crucial as Vipers lifted both the Uganda Premier League and the Uganda Cup, cementing his reputation as one of the squad’s most reliable performers.

Despite his impact, Vipers have yet to officially announce whether they will extend his contract. However, sources close to the club suggest that management is open to renewing Mbowa’s contract, though no agreement has been finalized.

Time is ticking, and the coming weeks will be crucial in determining Mbowa’s future. If no agreement is reached, the Venoms risk losing him on a free transfer during the current window.

The former SC Villa and Victoria University player has also been active outside club football, featuring for Mpindi Clan in the 2024 Bika Bya Baganda Football Championship, where they finished as runners-up after losing to Ngabi Nsamba in the final.

Vipers are expected to be one of the busiest teams in the transfer market. They have already secured the signature of forward Jude Ssemugabi and are in advanced talks to sign NEC FC midfielder Enock Ssebagala.

Whether Mbowa remains part of coach’s plans for the new season remains to be seen, but his future is certainly one of the key off-season storylines for the reigning champions.
