WAFCON: President Mahama pats Ghana on the back after bronze medal feat

President of Ghana, H E John Dramani Mahama has patted Ghana’s senior female team on the back for winning bronze at the just ended Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Queens beat South Africa by 4-2 via penalty shootouts after the full time finished 1-1 in the third place clash.

The team touched down in Ghana on Monday, July 28 and paid a courtesy call on the First Gentleman of the Land the following day where they received a heroine welcome by President Mahama.

“I want to congratulate Kurt and the management team, the coach and all of you for playing with a lion’s heart. It was just unfortunate that you had to play against the host nation at a critical time.

“They [Morocco] were determined to win whatever happened. Playing against the host team, it’s not the easiest of things but you held them throughout and it was only the penalties that let us down.

“I called the Sports Minister and told him to tell you not to be discouraged and you should go out there and play your hearts out and at least bring the bronze medal back and you did just that.” Mahama said.

President John Dramani Mahama promised to give an undisclosed amount of money to the team, however, the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has rewarded the Black Queens with an amount of GHS100,000.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, announced the decision to reward the team on Tuesday, July 29, when the players and technical team visited Parliament.
