WAFCON 2024: “The tournament will produce some surprises” – Clementine Toure

Former Ivory Coast female national team player, Clementine Toure is anticipating a very good tournament at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament kicked off on July 5 through to 26 in Morocco with 12 nations battling for honours with defending champions, South Africa paired in Group C alongside Ghana, Tanzania and Mali while record holders Nigeria slug it out against Algeria, Tunisia and Botswana in Group B.

“There are a number of countries which have made progress. We cannot talk about this without mentioning Nigeria who won the first seven editions,” Toure told Pan-Africa Football.

“However currently, it’s something else, the last edition was won by South Africa and so there are countries like Zambia and all these countries can cause a surprise and so I am waiting for countries like Zambia, South Africa and Morocco.

“Nigeria has not been the same yet [even though] we are still looking at Nigeria [at the tournament] and so we are looking forward to a good tournament.”

The three week long tournament will see the top two from each group, plus the two best third-placed teams, advance to the quarter-finals.
