Uganda's Crested Cranes took a significant step towards the next round of the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in the first leg courtesy of late strikes from Zaina Namuleme and Fazila Ikwaput.

In a closely contested match, both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances, particularly in a cagey first half. Uganda suffered an early setback in the 29th minute when defender Bridget Nabisalu was forced off due to injury, prompting head coach Sheryl Botes to introduce Phiona Nabulime as a replacement.

Before the break, Uganda’s forwards Resty Nanziri, Ikwaput, and Namuleme tested Ethiopia’s defense but were unable to break the deadlock. The second half saw the Crested Cranes push forward with more attacking intent, with Ikwaput going close only to be denied by Ethiopia’s goalkeeper.

Coach Botes made tactical adjustments after the hour mark, introducing Resty Kobusobozi and Agnes Nabukenya for Phiona Nabbumba and captain Viola Nambi to add fresh energy in midfield. Ethiopia also had moments to seize the advantage, but Uganda’s goalkeeper Ruth Aturo stood firm to keep them at bay.

As the game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, Namuleme was fouled just outside the 18-yard box in the 89th minute. She stepped up and expertly curled home the resulting free kick to break the deadlock.

With five minutes of stoppage time added, Ikwaput capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot home a composed finish, securing a vital 2-0 first-leg win for Uganda.

The Crested Cranes will now shift focus to the second leg in Addis Ababa on February 26, where they will look to defend their advantage and secure progression to the next qualification round.
