DR Congo national women’s team coach Hervé Happy has admitted they deserved to get something from their final fixture against Zambia in the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at Stade El Bachir, Mohammédia.

The Copper Queens needed a ninth minute goal courtesy of Rachael Kundananji to ensure that DR Congo finished their Group A fixtures without registering victory. Zambia took the lead in the ninth minute when Kundananji stepped up and curled a low free kick beyond the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Ruth Khonde.

Speaking after the game, Happy felt that a minor detail had denied them victory against Zambia but promised they will come back stronger for the next edition of the WAFCON.

“It’s a match we mustn’t lose. But we conceded an early goal and chased the score. Our girls gave everything they had. I remember their desire, audacity, and courage,” said Happy as quoted by CAFOnline.

Asked about the exceptional atmosphere, Happy cracked a smile: “It was exceptional. The fans carried us. I heard chants I hadn’t heard since the stadiums of Kinshasa... That’s Congo. Even in defeat, we sing. And I’m sure we'll come back stronger.”

DR Congo finished last in Group A without a win while Zambia and Morocco qualified for the quarterfinals after tying on seven points apiece.
