WAFCON: “Ghana’s third place finish is an incredible feat” – Jennifer Cudjoe

Ghana’s senior female team midfielder, Jennifer Cudjoe has expressed joy over the team’s third place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Queens claimed bronze for the first time since 2016 after beating South Africa 4-2 in the penalty shootouts following a 1-1 draw in full time at the Stade Larbi Zaouli.

The Black Queens recorded a 1-0 win over South Africa in third place at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yoaude, Cameroon to clinch bronze and Cudjoe says the repeat of the feat in Morocco is “incredible.”

“As a team we wanted to win the trophy but we couldn’t but we came home with a medal which is great of course it’s something that we haven’t done in a long time,” Cudjoe told Pan-Africa Football.

“So being able to do that is incredible. Obviously we should have been in there [finals] but also it’s a game and anything can happen [and] all we have to do next time is to do the right thing and hope we can get to the finals.”

The team arrived to a resounding welcome at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Monday, July 28.

The Black Queens lost 2-0 in the first Group A game to Banyana Banyana before recovering to draw 1-1 against Mali in the second match. A resounding 4-1 victory over Tanzania qualified the team for the knockout phase where they defeated Algeria by 4-2 via the penalty shootouts after a goalless draw in full time.

A 4-2 penalty shootouts victory against hosts Morocco saw the team drop down for third place.
