WAFCON warm up: Malawi to host Four-Nation tourney

Malawi will host a four-nation invitational women’s tournament later in November to prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals.

Apart from the hosts, the competition will attract another WAFCON-bound opponent Zambia. Zimbabwe have also been added to the roster to make it an even number although they did not qualify for the continental competition.

In a statement, the Football Association of Malawi confirms the availability of Zimbabwe and Zambia, adding that the association expects to bring on board a fourth team.

“So far, Zambia and Zimbabwe have confirmed their participation, while the fourth team is expected to be confirmed in the coming days,” the statement reads in part.

When is Malawi releasing a squad?

Meanwhile, the Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili is expected to name his squad for the matches in due course.

The Scorchers defeated Angola 2-0 in October to book their maiden place at the 2026 WAFCON finals scheduled for Morocco in March.

The tournament will take place at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe from 29 November to 2 December.

To prepare for the trip to Malawi, Zimbabwe women’s team coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda has released a provisional squad. The squad comprises only home-based players.
