WAFCON: Nigeria draw Algeria to win Group B, Botswana stay alive in dramatic fashion

Nigeria and Algeria both advanced to the quarterfinals out of Group B at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 0-0 draw to conclude the group stage at the Stade Larbi Zouali in Casablanca, Morocco. Meanwhile in the other match, Botswana kept their hopes alive with a dramatic late winner in a 2-1 victory over Tunisia.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons dominated the match but failed to find a way through against an outstanding defensive performance from their Algerian counterparts. For the first time in their history, the Algeria women’s national team qualifies for the knockout stages of a WAFCON with the result.

In the other Group B game that was played simultaneously at the Stade Père-Jégo, Botswana kept their quarterfinal hopes alive with a winning goal in the final moments for a 2-1 victory over Tunisia. After a potential match-winning goal was denied by VAR for offsides, Botswana marched back down and it was halftime substitute Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse who scored for the Mares.

Group C will conclude on Monday. South Africa and Mali, even on four points each, clash to determine the group winner while Ghana and Tanzania battle to avoid elimination with both teams needing a win to reach the quarterfinals. Botswana will join Senegal in the quarterfinals as the two best third place teams the Ghana-Tanzania game ends in a draw.
