Ghana’s senior female team made a bold step towards qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a big first leg victory over ten-woman Egypt in the qualifiers.

The Black Queens pummeled Egypt by 3-0 in Ismailia with Doris Boaduwaa opening the floodgates in the 42nd minute, silencing the sizable home fans.

Substitute Mary Amponsah doubled the advantage for the Black Queens in the 85th minute from close range before midfielder Grace Asantewaa iced the cake for the 2024 WAFCON silver medalists.

Ghana will host Egypt in return leg on Tuesday in Accra

Speaking in his post-match interview, head coach of the Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren described the victory as an amazing one, adding that it was not an easy match away from home.

“You can see that we haven’t been together for a while. It doesn’t connect like it did a couple of months ago. But the energy was there, I believe that we did a lot of good things, and in the end, we did well.

“In the end, a difficult away game we won 3-0. The result is amazing. It puts us in a good position to make sure that we make the next AFCON,” Kim Lars Bjorkegren said.

The Black Queens are expected to return to Ghana on Friday to prepare for the reverse fixture on Tuesday, October 28. The 2026 Women Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted by Morocco for the third consecutive time between March 17 and April 3 with a reported 16 nations battling for honours.
