WAFCON (Q): Brazil-based striker to lead Angola’s battle against Malawi

Brazil-based striker Patricia Seteco will lead Angola when they host Malawi on Thursday in a 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying match against Malawi.

The Ferroviaria SAF star is the notable face in the 23-member squad Angola coach Sousa Garcia named on Thursday.

Who else is in Angola’s squad?

Angola’s squad comprises other foreign-based players including Sweden and Greece-based Flora Lacho (Tripolis) and Alexandra Soares (HB Kolge) respectively while Sarah Luvumba plays for TP Mazembe ladies.

Angola named their side a few days after Malawi released Chawinga sisters Temwa and Tabitha as the leaders of their team.

Other notable inclusions in the Malawi squad are 2022 COSAFA U-17 Girls’ Championship top scorer Rose Kabzere of French side Montpellier and attacker Vanessa Chikupila of Biik Kazygurt (Kazakhstan).

The two teams will meet again at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe five days later, Malawi hope to sail past Angola in the two-legged tie to clinch their first ever WAFCON final ticket.

Ahead of the Angola game, the Scorchers played eight friendlies twice each against South Africa, Lesotho and Zambia and once each against Ghana and Morocco.

The Malawians beat Zambia once and Lesotho twice while losing the rest against the giants, raising questions on their readiness for the test against the Angolans.
