Malawi women’s football team coach Lovemore Fazili has shared his thoughts on their away goalless draw with Angola in a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying match on Thursday.
The result left both teams with a chance to qualify for the Morocco WAFCON finals, although the Scorchers feel they have the wind in their sails heading into the reverse fixture in Lilongwe in a fortnight.
In a post-match interview, Fazili said his team did everything right but scored at November 11 Stadium in Luanda.
“We played much better and about the scores, I was expecting us to score more goals. In the first and second halves, we had plenty of chances, but we could not utilize them,” he said.
“They [girls] are promising me something that when we go home, we will finish this game. I know we have drawn, but we are not expecting any draw with them when we go home.”
The visitors’ coach named a strong starting XI for the away match at November 11 Stadium where entry was free of charge. Tabitha Chawinga led the frontline in the absence of her injured sister Temwa.
The Lyon ladies star had, the previous day, played her part to motivate her team-mates by donating football boots to the entire squad.
Chawinga had the chance to put the Scorchers ahead in the 34th minute but she misplaced her 34th minute effort.
The action continued to revolve around Chawinga, who broke through on the left and cut inside, but winger-cum athlete Asimenye Simwaka’s effort flew off target in the 67th minute.
In the opposite camp, Brazil-based striker Patricia Seteco spearheaded the attack of Angola’s squad.
Malawi will host the Angolans on Tuesday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe where the ultimate overall winner of the two-legged tie will qualify for the WAFCON finals.
