Malawi have qualified for the next round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers after their opponents Congo pulled out citing lack of competitions and preparation.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) confirmed the latest development in a statement seen by Pan-Africa Football and went further to confirm that the Scorchers will face the winner between Zimbabwe and Angola in October later this year.
“The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wishes to inform the public that the Congolese Football Federation has officially withdrawn its Women’s national team from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers due to a lack of competitions and preparation,” read part of the statement.
“The Scorchers were scheduled to play against Congo on 20th February at home, with the return leg away on 25th February 2025. As a result, the Malawi Women’s National Team will automatically advance to the next round of the qualifiers where they will face the winner between Zimbabwe and Angola in October later this year.”
The statement concluded: “FAM plans to proceed with the team’s camping programme as the Association is working on arranging friendly matches to ensure the FIFA Window is fully utilised. Further details regarding the team’s next steps will be communicated in due course.”
