Despite their exit from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco at the semifinals stage, South Africa women’s national team have received praise from SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan, who said the team fought bravely throughout the tournament.
The African champions campaign in the tournament came to an end after rivals Nigeria edged them out 2-1 in a pulsating clash to book their place in the final and keep alive hopes of a record-extending 10th continental title.
Nigeria scored the opening goal of the contest from the penalty spot through captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the 45th minute, but coach Dr Desiree Ellis’ charges clawed their way back into the match and also equalised from the penalty spot through Linda Motlhalo in the 60th minute.
The match seemed to be heading to extra time until the horror injury to Gabriela Salgado, who was eventually stretchered off the pitch and South Africa never recovered after the incident. Michelle Alozie struck a sensational long-range winner deep into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations among the Nigerian players and fans inside Stade Larbi Zaouli.
“First of all, we would like to wish a speedy recovery to Gabriela Salgado. We are all waiting to hear what the doctors have to say either tonight or tomorrow. Banyana Banyana fought very well, and it was a brave performance from the WAFCON defending champions,” said Dr Jordaan.
“You have established yourselves as one of the best teams on the continent. We fought bravely and we are proud of your performance. Well done to the whole team, the team’s Head of Delegation Thabile Msomi, the coach Dr Desiree Ellis, the captain Refiloe Jane and all players. We are proud of your efforts.”
Following the win, Nigeria remained unbeaten in the tournament and will head into the final with renewed confidence while South Africa will regroup for the third-place playoff fixture against Ghana, who lost to Morocco.
