Senegal got off to a perfect start at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations with a 4-0 thrashing of DR Congo in Mohammedia, Morocco to complete the first round of games in Group A.
A nightmare start to their campaign in Morocco condemned the Congolese selection to a deficit they would never recover from. Senegal forward Mama Diop scored twice, opening the scoring in the 5th minute with a clever lifted finish over DRC goalkeeper and captain Fideline Ngoy.
After Nguenar Ndiaye doubled the lead in the 13th minute courtesy of some disorganization by the Congolese defense, Diop added her second to make it 3-0 in the 22nd minute. The Olympique de Marseille attacker showed her class after a stellar campaing in France's second tier.
Ndiaye then added one more before halftime to put the result far beyond doubt. The Congolese recovered to put in a strong second half effort but could not open their account in Morocco. Senegal will next face Group A favorites Zambia on Wednesday while DRC take on hosts Morocco.
